Concerns with the New Site -----

Mar 31, 2011 at 4:20 AM | Adam  in RadioDaddy

Hello all,

I've recently been receiving a lot of complaints through various PMs, forum posts, article comments and e-mail. I wanted to take a minute to address some of your concerns regarding the new website.

Let me start by saying this: It was either new RadioDaddy, or none at all.

If you didn't know, we launched into the upgrade early because our hosting company shut us down for using excessive resources. Our site was growing too big (30,000 members, almost 150GB of audio files), on old forum software from 2008. The forum software finally hit a point where it was causing our server to crash and constantly re-boot. If we didn't launch the upgrade when we did, all of our data would have been corrupted and we would have had to start completely fresh. This would've meant a lot of unhappy users..

So, like I said before, our options were to upgrade, or discontinue RadioDaddy.com. We chose to upgrade.

Now, onto concerns of members:

-One Post Per Day
Yes, this is correct. Not one request per day, one post per day. This is put into place so we can discourage users from taking advantage of our volunteers. Once a user has hit 30 posts, this restriction will be removed. This way, users that wish to contribute to our site can do so, and we know they are really serious about it.

-Reputation System
When we upgraded the reputation system, we were able to save the reputation points, but the comments were not transferred because this new site does not allow for reputation comments. To leave a reputation point, all you have to do is click the green plus on the bottom right of the post. We had planned on starting fresh, everyone with 0 reps, but I took that extra few hours of my time to try and save them and fortunately I was successful.

-Replying to Posts
This is the same as the old RD, to add a reply to the entire topic, hit Add Reply at the top or bottom of the forum post. To reply to a certain user, scroll to their post and hit Reply at the bottom of the post you wish to reply to. A quote of that post will appear when you are typing your reply.

-View New Content
To view the content posted since the last time you visited the website, click "View New Content" on the top right of any page. Once you are there, make sure the Forums tab is selected. We realize that there are some problems with the View New Content page, but it is an issue with the board software and the creators are fixing it and will be updating our board software in the next few months.

-Who Downloaded?
This was a custom add-on to our old board by a programmer that is no longer around. We will be implementing this soon, but it may take a little while for us to implement it.

-Shoutbox
This will also be implemented a little later down the road.

I will add more to this list if you have more concerns, feel free to comment below.

I am the sole technician of this entire website. I do not get paid, I volunteer my time. Coding something like a shoutbox, as simple as it may seem, takes days of coding by people who work 9am-5pm programming. I do not have that much free time so something like that may take me a few months. If you are an experienced PHP programmer that wishes to volunteer your time, you are welcome to contact me.

And as always, if you have questions about new features or can't find the button to do something, PM me! You'll get an answer quicker by PMing me than posting in the forums. I welcome your suggestions also.

Thanks!
Adam

Thanks Adam, for clearing all that! I had a few minor thingies which i've been meaning to ask, but thought i'd let you guys work it all out before bothering you guys with it.

I know quite a few things about webdesign, PHP, MySql, IPBoard, Joomla, and some other systems but never myself have ran, let alone upgraded, a 30.000 member website... I think you guys did a tremendous job! Some custom features indeed would be nice, but hey, Rome wasn't build in one day!

Let me take this opportunity to say: Chapeau to the whole RD crew!

Thanks, Adam. Not my intent to complain. Any upgrade has welcome features, but it can be a bit like moving all the keys on your keyboard. Takes a while to comfortably find everything once more. Have appreciated your efforts for a long time.

I can vouch for barryfatman - he's a full-time radio station production guy who use to do heaps of stuff here years ago.

Can I suggest upgrading him to the next level.

Thanks Adam,
You have politely and professionally responded to my concerns. Thanks for all you do for this site. I certainly appreciate your efforts, as well as all of the others who work so hard to keep this site going. I'm just glad to have a place to do this. Keep up the good work.

With all due respect Adam...why aren't you getting paid? Someone is collecting my monthly membership fee, but it sounds like you are the one doing all the work!

I do have a question regarding the new reputation system. If we are unable to view comments associated with a rep, how can we tell if a user has negative reps? Will there be two numbers...one in green, showing positive numbers and another in red showing negative reps?

Thanks

Neither Adam or I get paid and as Adam pointed out in a recent post he and I paid for this upgrade out of our pockets...we actually had to pay to work at RD, go figure, but we did it because we love the site and the people here and to not upgrade the site would have meant for it to go by the wayside. I also pay for the Radio Station (that I promise will be up and running permanately soon) out of my pocket, the listener slots and the SW Cast to make it legal...I can only assume the money you are paying in fees goes to Dan to pay for the hosting...Adam and I certainly don't see a red cent.

The issues will be worked out, the site will become smooth again and all will be right...we're just hitting a few growing pains right now...Hang in there.

for a shoutbox have you considered Ajax chat. I have it on a mybb forum, and it can be incorporated into other sites quite easily. the same chat box is on a wordpress ite, and a standalone site. no need for extra code.

I remember when I started I too thought that Adam and a few others like the admins/moderators were rolling in the cash for the work they did here on RD. I can tell you as a moderator it is certainly not the case. Running a site and paying for all the upgrades to that part of my business I truly appreciate the time/money and headaches that Adam and Eric have invested to keep ole Radio Daddy up and running.

Thanks

I haven't been to RD in well over a year. As someone who is getting a first impression for the second time, I have to say that I enjoy the updated look. My only concern is that there is no clear navigation to the forum. I know it's hear and a central part of the site, but in looking at the navigation menu, it seems to have been left out. It makes me wonder what else I may be missing out on due to their being no navigation link. If you can expand on the navigation menu you will be right on the money.

I'm not entirely sure I understand the point of the 1 post per day maximum. Surely if you wanted a thriving community you would allow your users to post as much as they wanted. If it's to protect the voice over talent, they can look after themselves.

I love the service that this site provides but the fact that you only allow one post per day AND don't allow producers to PM the voiceover artists makes my job incredibly difficult. I posted a $40 request and had a question about one of the responses. According to your rules I'm not allowed to ask my question for 24 hours since my last post. And if I do ask my question I've wasted my post for the day. I don't want to sound bitter but you are making it very difficult to use your service. You're actually giving me incentive to use your competition. I would prefer to use independent sites like this but I just can't spend 4 days trying to get a voiceover just because I can't post. There are other ways to protect the artists that don't hinder their clients' ability to work.

The truth is I think this site could be amazing and I would love to utilize it more. But the rules make that very difficult.

End rant.
